Outgrowing Batman

Caped Crusader
Dark Knight
watchful protector
successful orphan

I fell in love with his character as a kid
because I couldn’t fight back
I wanted others to feel pain
for their slights against me
it wasn’t until I grew up that I
realized his villains were also in pain
and I saw his empathy and compassion
perhaps fists in the face wouldn’t do as well
as financial empowerment and mental health care
but what he represented to the victims was
a fighting chance

I read somewhere that we don’t need heroes anymore
we need caretakers
Leslie Thompkins who provide stability
not those who swoop in after the fact
so I say goodbye to Batman
his story a life raft to the child in my heart
