mother in water

as a child I waited on her

naked dark brown skin peeking out

from the water

cesarean scar and breasts in full view

before I was ashamed of her nakedness

I would sit by the bathtub

my sibling swimming in her belly

she beckoned me to place my brush just so

the tiniest bump moved it

I did not understand (not truly)

what that kick meant

but I was at the cusp of knowing

another me and yet not
